Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT)

Exercise ECG / Exercise Stress Test

The Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT), also known as an Exercise Stress Test or Exercise ECG, is a valuable tool used to assess how well your heart performs under physical stress. At Medicals Northwest, we offer this test to evaluate your heart's response to increased activity levels, helping detect any potential cardiac issues.

What is an Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT)?

The ETT (also referred to as an Exercise Stress Test or Exercise ECG) is a non-invasive procedure that measures your heart rate, blood pressure, and electrical activity (via an electrocardiogram) while you exercise, usually on a treadmill. It mimics the effects of physical exertion to assess cardiovascular health.

Why Might You Need an ETT? Doctors recommend an ETT for:

  • Assessing fitness levels before surgery.

  • Diagnosing coronary artery disease.

  • Monitoring heart conditions.

  • Evaluating chest pain or shortness of breath.

What to Expect During the Test:

  • The test takes about 30-60 minutes.

  • You’ll walk on a treadmill, with the intensity gradually increasing.

  • Your heart rate and blood pressure will be monitored throughout.

  • After the test, you’ll have a cool-down period where measurements continue.

What Can an Exercise ECG Show?

The Exercise ECG (also known as the Exercise Tolerance Test) is a crucial diagnostic tool for identifying coronary heart disease. It provides valuable insights by showing whether your heart muscle is receiving enough blood from the coronary arteries during physical activity. If there’s any restriction in blood flow, it can indicate blockages or narrowing of the arteries.

Additionally, an Exercise ECG can detect symptoms of angina, as areas deprived of oxygen (Ischemia) will show up on the ECG tracing. This helps doctors determine if the chest pain you’ve been experiencing is related to coronary artery disease or other heart conditions.

When is an Exercise ECG Recommended?
Doctors may recommend an Exercise ECG in several situations, such as:

  • After a procedure like coronary angioplasty to monitor recovery.

  • To assess fitness and cardiac health before participating in a sports event, such as a Motorsport Competition License (MSA Medical) or a marathon.

  • For medical assessments required for certain licenses, including DVLA Medicals for Class 1 Drivers (HGV/LGV).
